Squirrel Fishing

So, a few weeks ago, Nolan comes in and tells me that he and Daddy were "squirrel fishing". 

What?!? 

I give Frank a puzzled look.  He laughs.

Well, here is what those boys were up to. . . 

Nolan loves to practice casting his fishing pole in the yard.  He usually has a small plastic fish hooked onto the end of the line.  Well, Frank gets this bright idea to put a nut (he had found some big walnuts) on the end of his line.  He finds a little hole in the nut that will fit onto the end of the hook perfectly.  Frank tells Nolan to cast near the squirrel to see if he can get the squirrel to "bite".  They do this a few times.  Once they even left it dangling over the clothes line in midair. 

Well, one particular day, they cast it near a squirrel and the squirrel goes and picks it up.  They yank on the line . . . and completely confuse and puzzle the squirrel.  (Is this redneck??)  The squirrel runs away. . .thoroughly freaked out.  So, they cast again near another squirrel.  The squirrel waits a moment, and then picks it up.  Then . . . YANK.  Well, this squirrel is completely confused as well, but it is more determined.  Frank and Nolan don't totally reel in the line, so the squirrel goes back over to the nut and picks it up again.  They let the squirrel hold it awhile this time.  But then . . . they begin to slowly pull on the line.  The squirrel pulls back.  They pull on the line . . . the squirrel pulls back.  So, there they sit playing Tug-o-War with the squirrel! (seriously!!)  Believe it or not . . . the squirrel ends up winning and takes off with the nut!!!

Well, Frank finds another nut and re-baits his line.  This time, Frank wants to try to get the squirrel to climb the tree with his nut . . . and then yank it out.  So, he and Nolan wait and wait.  But, to no avail.  They weren't quite able to pull that one off.

Yet . . .
